As these movies are all relatively new and are only recently released or getting released soon, I’m gonna go with my gut instinct with them. The films I’ll be featuring in this 3-part-post have all been researched and are on my watchlist for future viewing. I am very rarely wrong when it’s comes to world cinema titles.. So let’s get this started!!

Without a doubt this film has the most insane trailer that I’ve seen in quite some time. I’m a huge fan of Japanese cinema because they are just bat-shit-crazy, they make movies that are so twisted and deranged that it takes a special kind of viewer to appreciate them….. Someone who is touched with a mild case of insanity… Thankfully, I fit that bill just perfectly, as does most of my readers… So we’re good to go!! I just have to point out that this film is listed for release in 2013 but is only starting make some waves now… It’s my list, it goes on!

Official Plot
A love-hate relationship develops between a deranged young woman and an old man. Nami inherits a large sum of money, freeing up time for her to engage in a series of bizarre hobbies, including spying on lonely people like herself. One day she spies on an old man as he watches porn DVDs in his home. After witnessing this, she begins relentlessly stalking him.

I had heard of this film before but had completely forgotten about it, thanks to Fangoria posting the trailer on Facebook recently, I’ve once again got it in my sights.. And this time, it’s not getting away. I am constantly on the hunt for movies, some manage to get away from me, or slip beneath the cracks, but it’s only a matter of time before I get my grip on them and get them up on Moviehooker

The film reminded me a little bit of Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, not that it was about loads of god Damn Hairy apes, but about dogs who aren’t full pedigree, and have had enough of being outcasts. They start up a dog army to teach us filthy humans just who’s boss which looks like it’s lead by a young teenage girl (the owner of the “Ceaser” like dog).

The one thing I loved about the trailer was that it wasn’t very CGI-heavy, it looked like real animals, just shot very cleverly. The premise sounds interesting and has already conquered Cannes Film festival…. So that alone gives us the reason to be eagerly awaiting this one.

3: Broken

download (1)
We all know how big a fan of Korean cinema I am. Recently, I finally got my girlfriend to watch Castaway On The Moon, and I was blown-away all over again by the lead actors performance. I realised that I hadn’t done any research into any other movies that he’s been in. That’s when I found out about Broken. I purposely didn’t read too much into it in fear of spoiling it. All I know is that it’s a vengeance type of movie, and if anyone can do Vengeance – then it’s the Koreans. So without even knowing what this flick is remotely about, it goes on the list.

I’m really looking forward to this one

Another film that has makes its way right to the top of my watch-list – No doubt this will be another solid entry from the guys of XYZFilms.

Official Plot (official site)

When honest undercover cop Chili Ngcobo (winner of the TV Talent show, ‘Class Act’, S’dumo Mtshali), and his by-the-book partner, Sello ‘Shoes’ Moshoeshoe (lead actor of the Oscar Winning film ‘Tsotsi’, Presley Chweneyagae), are cheated out of a large reward by their corrupt superiors, Chili finds another way of getting the money he feels they deserve. Chili penetrates a cash-in-transit heist gang, and instead of busting them, convinces his partner to participate in a once off score.

Stay tuned for part 2 of this post which i’ll have up in a few days. Thanks for reading

I’m pretty sure this one has already been released and not, then you can expect it very soon. I have just seen the trailer for this and was automatically drawn to it. Did I understand what the fuck was going on in the trailer?, no, I didn’t !. Did I even remotely know what it was about, again, no, I didn’t. All I seen was a cop who was on the pursuit of a wolf that has been terrorising a village. When his search brings him to a nearby by wooded area, he meets a strange man in a long red dress and is carrying a samurai sword,. The samurai tells the cop that he is on a crusade, he then asks the cop to accompany him and the cop accepts.

I have no idea where this film is gonna go, it could turn out to be a love story but I highly doubt it. All I know is that is sounds original and judging from the trailer it looks pretty awesome as well.

Based on a hugely popular manga series by Hitoshi Iwaaki that was published from 1990-1995. PARASYTE tells the story of 17 yr old Shinichi Izumi, a kid who is unaware that while he is laying sleeping, a worm-like alien is trying to take over his body, but because he is wearing headphones, the alien is unable to get into his ears and infect his brain, so it burrows a hole in his arm. When he wakes the next day he finds that most of the human-race has been taken over by aliens, and that his arm can mutate into just about anything (think Prototype only more insane).

I haven’t had the pleasure of reading the manga series but I must admit it looks and sounds absolutely awesome and completely original.

it was recently announced that there was a live-action adaptation coming our way which will be split into  a two part series . The first instalment will be here as early as November, with the second following sometime next year.

I also read an article that Gareth Evans (writer of The Raid and The raid 2) had joined the cast. I have no idea if this is true. If he is involved then I’d say he’d be behind the camera rather than in front of it.

an Anime version is also on the way

No doubt this is gonna be another beauty from production company XYZ FILMS. XYZ FIKMS keep releasing fantastic movies, and there is no sign of them ever stopping. These guys know what they’re doing. They have given us classics like THE RAID, THE RAID 2, TUSK (not yet released), BIG BAD WOLVES, ON THE JOB, THE NIGHT COMES FOR US (not yet released). Now we have THE DEAD LANDS to add to the list.

After his tribe is slaughtered through an act of treachery, Hongi – a Maori chieftain’s teenage son – must avenge his father’s murder in order to bring peace and honor to the souls of his loved ones. Vastly outnumbered by the band of villains, Hongi’s only hope is to pass through the feared and forbidden Dead Lands and forge an uneasy alliance with the mysterious ‘Warrior’ a ruthless fighter who has ruled the area for years. — IMDb Plot: The Dead Lands (2014)

Not only do the the French make quality horror films, they’re also pretty damn good at making thrillers. It’s been a while though since I have seen any French film (of any genre) that’s left it’s mark with me. The trailer for this looks really good, but there was a horrible stench of an inevitable American remake, such a rancid stench, you can almost see it coming through your screen.

Another manga adaptation from japan, this time, veteran director Takeshi Miike is the man in the directors chair. Miike has been out of action for quite some time but recently he’s been attached to direct three movie AS GOD SAYS, OVER YOU DEAD BODY, also a world war 2 drama/thriller that will star Tom Hardy (not sure of the title, sorry).

Miike is no stranger in bringing us ultra-violence adapted from a manga series. ICHI THE KILLER was, and still is one of the most shocking and daring films of recent years. A film that is guaranteed to make you go ” wtf did I just watch?”.

What I admire about Miike is that he has always been a daring filmmaker, films like AUDITION, ICHI THE KILLER,HAPPINESS OF THE KATIKURI’SVISITOR Qhave proved that the man is one the best in the business. He really doesn’t give a shit about censorship.. His films are as raw and brutal as they come and more than often, very graphic and extremely disturbing. So, Mr Miike, I salute you sir!

A rich industrialist is brutally kidnapped. While he physically and mentally degenerates in imprisonment, the kidnappers, police and the board of the company of which he is director negotiate about the ransom of 50 million euro.

When I read the reviews about this, I was expecting it to be more brutal than it was. The film is more of a drama than anything else that focuses on the life of a rich man who is kidnapped. Although not very brutal or graphic, the film is still extremely intense and you know from the get-go that the people who are doing the kidnapping, ain’t fucking about and if the ransom ain’t getting paid, then you’re under no illusion that the hostage will be going back in pieces.

The acting was fantastic and it’s as realistic as you’d want a film to be. This comes highly recommended.

If you’ve made up your mind and you’ll be watching “Rapt” then don’t watch the trailer below. It seems to give a big part of the story away. I watched it knowing it was about a kidnapping and nothing else.

Filipino crime thriller inspired by a real-life scandal in which prison inmates are temporarily released from prison to work as contract killers on behalf of politicians and high-ranking military officials.

I can almost smell the American remake. This film was brilliant. The acting was fantastic. The characters were great, and the thing was based on a true story??

Prisoners are selected to ,carry out assassinations for political officials and then sneaked back into the prison the next day to avoid any sort of suspicion. If that ain’t enough to grab your attention, then I don’t know what is.

I really liked the characters as well. You have like a father/son relationship between the two assassins/inmates, one is young and stereotypically clumsy and the other, a wiser and older man (sort of like the Filipino Leon) who is training as he goes and covering up any mistakes that is left by his young predecessor.

Another fine instalment from the mighty XYZ FILMS

OFFICIAL PLOT (asian wiki)

Sang-Hoon (Yang Ik-June) works as a low-level gangster collecting money for his longtime loan shark friend. Sang-Hoon seethes with rage due to his troubled childhood and abusive father. At any moment, Sang-Hoon can lash out at relatives, friends & strangers with the only way he knows how to solve problems – savage violence.

I sat down with my girlfriend to watch this. The opening scene is a man beating a woman around in the middle of a street (my girlfriend immediately gave me the evil eye) then out of nowhere the main character shows up and starts beating the shit out of the dude who was beating the woman (girlfriend continues to stare at me, knowing this film is gonna be hardcore and she ain’t gonna like it). Then when you think the main character is going to help the lady who getting smacked about, he kneels down beside and start slapping her across the face, saying stuff like “why do you just sit there and take it you fucking cunt!” (At this point me and the girlfriend reached a mutual agreement, that she would go on the iPad and I would continue watching).

If you’re no stranger to Korean cinema and you’ve watched some of the classics like “mother”, “bad guy”, then I’m pretty sure you’d enjoy this one. It’s a pretty uneasy watch and when I say there is a lot of domestic violence in it, then I ain’t kidding. That concept alone makes it very hard to watch. The acting has to be mentioned purely for the leading actor. The man deserved an oscar for the performance he gave.

The story goes in an obvious direction, but how it gets there is uncertain, and that’s what makes this film a masterpiece.

After receiving a porn movie in the post that stars his recently deceased daughter. The tape shows her heavily intoxicated or medicated and obviously not taking part in this film of her own free will.
The father sets out to track down and kill those responsible for the tape and to find out the truth about his daughters death.
A fantastic low budget revenge movie from Australia, with a phenomenal and very believable performance from “Peter Marshall”.
Check this out if ya haven’t already done so.

Years after escaping from her kidnappers. a young girl along with her friend (who she grew up with in a orphanage and also suffered abuse) set out to kill her captors that once subdued her to unbelievable and unimaginable torture.
This film is not just a brilliant revenge movie but an astounding horror that takes you into a world never before seen on screen. This is my favourite film of all time. Being the sad fucker that I am, I have probably watched this film around 40 times and I still continue to do so with every new visitor that visits my apartment, and every single one of them has left my apartment feeling very uneasy and they would be talking about for weeks later.
So what I am saying is that this film does its job as a horror film, it’s got very mature and graphic content and is primarily for an audience who like their films extreme.
An American remake is in the works at the minute which will be directed by ” Daniel Stamm” who helmed “the last exorcism”, and will be written by “Mark L Smith” who wrote “the hole”, “vacancy”, and also “vacancy 2, the final cut”. The film is is also reportedly gonna star Kirsten Stewart” and it will be produced by the same producers from the “twilight” franchise.
Director “Stamm” said that he wants to take a more American approach to the film and wants to have a glimmer of hope at the end.
If the cover says from the producers of “twilight” I will have lost my entire faith in humanity.

After his wife is brutally killed by a deranged serial killer. A special agent sets out to find and catch the killer.
One of the best films you could ever hope to see. This film does not stop, from the very first scene right to when the credits roll. A superior violent and action packed revenge/serial killer film from South Korea.

4: I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (original)
One of the very first extreme movies that follows a woman who takes revenge on the group of hillbillies that gang raped her. This film is very graphic, and has some really shocking scenes. A really disturbing but completely justifiable act of vengeance
I personally found this film even more disturbing as is was my mother who recommended it to me. So that alone will always stay with me. A really good but very hard to watch ( for both sexes) film that has become a cult classic.

Another classic to come out of Korea. The story of a man who was held captive for 15 years without and reason, is set free and given a certain amount of time to figure out who and why he was imprisoned and to seek revenge on those responsible.
This film has went down in film history not only as a great revenge film but it has earned it’s place as one of the finest films ever made.
American remake already made. I can’t find any footage on it anywhere but I know that it’s directed by “spike lee” and stars “Josh Brolin”, “Samuel L Jackson ” and also “Elizabeth Olsen” .
A very brave move for “spike lee” to try and remake one of the finest films of our time. A film witch had an ending that I couldn’t imagine a mainstream american audience enjoying, but in saying that, we have been promised new characters and much more darker ending ( his grandmother maybe?)
Here’s a quote I found online from the producer of the remake

“It’s very similar [to Chan-wook Park’s film], but we’ve added new elements. Or, Mark Protosevich has come up with new elements to it that will throw off the audience who have seen the original movie because there are new characters and new situations that present themselves in a way that changes the story but eventually go in the same direction.”

I think it sounds promising.. Good or not ill still be first in line to see it .

6: 7 DAYS
This is a French/Canadian torture flick with a strong believable plot and great actors. The story of a doctor who’s kid is sexually assaulted and murdered . The killer is caught straight away and not happy with the sentence he was given the doctor hires people to break him out of custody and takes him to a remote location and chains him up and goes to town on him for 7 DAYS.
Although there is serious violence inflicted on this guy , you are constantly thinking THIS MOTHERFUCKER deserves every bit he gets .
There was a weak American remake made of this called “the tortured” starring the dude from desperate housewives and the almighty BILL MOSELEY . If I never had seen 7 days then i probably would of liked it , not that it was bad Film but it just didnt have the intensity of the original .

A real slow burning and extremely tense psychological thriller. The film follows 3 characters, “Erica” who’s is a young nymphomaniac that will fuck just about everything with a heartbeat. Then we have young “frank” a washed up rock musician still trying to make it big with his band in his garage, and then we have “Nate”, the strange war veteran neighbour who lives in the same building as “Erica”. He sees Erica as a troubled soul and just wants to help.
This film has a lot of nudity and sex, and it ain’t any classy sex you would see in a big Hollywood movie. The sex is dirty and sleazy and very hard to watch on screen ( unless you are a dirty sleaze then you will be fine) but thankfully it’s only at the start of the movie and its just to establish how fucked up “Erica” is, and it sets the mood for the film pretty quick. Once the film gets going and if this is all you know about the storyline then I urge you to hunt it out and check out what happens next as it has to be seen to be believed. Please try and stay away from reviews of this film as a lot of them would give away certain parts of the story that I found absolutely necessary to be viewed by complete surprise.
The acting is fantastic throughout especially from “Nate” who was played by English actor “Noah Taylor” and the film is superbly made and shot on a tiny budget by English director “Simon Rumley”
A film that would be suited for fans who like their stuff very dark and very disturbing.
Accompanied by a disturbing score that just sounds like some dude hitting random notes on a piano this alone will fuck with your head just as much as the story does.

one of the most graphic and violent films to ever be released. A film that is so disturbing in every way that you will probably need to go out for some air after watching it.
The film follows the boyfriend of a beautiful woman who was violently raped in the Paris suburbs. His hunt for the rapist leads him and his friend into a dark and sleazy underground. This film like most of the others in my top ten list has some of the most disturbing scenes in it that you could ever imagine. not for the faint hearted, a breakthrough and fantastic, original piece of cinema,.with a
Powerhouse performance from “Vincent Cassel”.

This film is very straight forward. A guy who owns a local pawnshop befriends his next door neighbour who happens to be a 8yr old girl. He goes through each day not saying a word and ignoring every attempt that the little girl makes to try and get him to talk..
When the little girl is kidnapped by a group of men who wanna harvest her organs, he takes on the whole crime syndicate by himself, leaving countless amounts of corpses along the way.
I thought this film was unreal. I am not a huge fan of action movies, but this movie reminded me of “Leon” with a little bit of “man on fire”, and to top it all off that, its fucking Korean, and it kicks serious ass.
